Weighing up the benefits of a business coach

Here's how to get your business to its destination without too many bumps in the road.

When travelling, we have the choice of how to get to our destination. Normally the choice involves consideration of the importance of the trip, the distance, time and budget available.

When travelling a reasonable distance, flying is usually desirable as it is quick and frees up time otherwise spent behind the wheel. We arrive at our destination refreshed and with more time to explore. However, these benefits usually come at a premium cost over the road-trip. At the end of the day, we have to weigh up the pros and cons and make the decision that best suits our needs.

The decision to use a business coach to help establish or grow your business is essentially the same choice. You can take shortcuts by using your coach’s knowledge and experience to avoid many of the common pitfalls made by those new to business. This saves you from many of the cuts and bruises by being guided along the path by someone who has been on the journey themselves.

A good business coach will have practical experience of running a business to back up the concepts that can be read in business textbooks. Successfully implementing change is a mix of having an open, enquiring mind, alongside a critical eye on consequences by assessing risk. Both are essential – enthusiastic creativity needs to live in harmony with experienced pragmatism.

When starting out in business, I am reminded if the old adage: we don’t know what we don’t know. Having an experienced coach will ensure precious time and resources are used wisely – providing a sounding board and becoming a critical friend.

Let’s be honest: coaches aren’t superheroes. Even with a coach some unforeseen obstacles will need to be navigated, but hopefully it will be a less rocky path with an experienced guide to help find solutions to get you back on track.

Any hesitation in working with a coach will quickly evaporate as real progress is made in getting to your destination safely and quickly.
